Audition lines for lead and supporting roles are as follows:
Agent Daniel Mercer
Scene starts with MERCER talking to TED, who he believes is responsible for the disappearances, with knowing TED’S daughter was taken 19 years prior. TED, however, isn’t responsible and is determined to find out what actually happened to her when other people start vanishing in similar ways.
MERCER
MERCER is a little on edge, and is trying to prey any answer out of TED, acting with suspicion.
Let’s review the facts, shall we?
You were the last person to see your daughter alive 19 years ago.
TED
Like MERCER, TED is also on edge, but more frustrated because no one is taking his word seriously all this time.
(Says in a sarcastic tone, as if having been told this many times before)
It’s now a crime for a father to take his daughter camping?
MERCER
And now you’re back in town, and now two more people have disappeared.
That seems to be a tremendance big coincidence.
TED
No. No it’s not. But maybe I’m here because people are disappearing,
not the other way around.
MERCER pauses, confused at the wording.
MERCER
You say that like someone who already knows what’s happening.
TED
I have my theories. But I say it like someone who’s been ignored for 19 years.
MERCER
(Says it with a small hesitation) Then help me out. If you didn’t do it, who did?
TED
You feel it, don’t you agent? Something is wrong with this area. With these woods.
MERCER
MERCER gives a look that tries to shut TED’S explanation, holding up a hand.
We can’t arrest a forest. And this isn’t a ghost story, Ted. This is real life, with flesh and blood killers. Real people are missing, and the best answer you have is a monster in the woods.
Jake Hill and Comrad
Scene starts with a group of teenagers sitting around a campfire in the forest at night, including COMRAD and JAKE. One of the girls, MADISON, had wandered into the trees by herself a few minutes ago and has yet returned.
COMRAD
(Says with a sarcastic, nonchalant tone) Relax. She’s probably just trying to freak you out.
COMRAD calls toward the forest line.
Congrats, Madison, you’ve officially freaked out Jake.
JAKE
(Says with a nervous tone) My dad used to warn me not to stay out past sunset. Say the woods weren’t safe.
JAKE avoids eye contact after saying it, as if embarrassed
I always thought he was just trying to scare me.
COMRAD
Waves a hand with a sarcastic scoff.
Oh, here we go. Jake’s woodland ghost stories.
What’s next, huh? Glowing eyes? Cursed burial grounds? Oh how about bigfoot with a beer belly?
JAKE
I’m serious, Comrad.
(He looks toward the trees nervously)
Madison would’ve answered by now.
COMRAD
(Says with a sarcastic mocking tone) Or she found somewhere to pee and then oh no, a monster snatched her up and had her as a midnight snack.
COMRAD lets out a cruel like laugh.
JAKE
Can you stop acting like this is funny for, like, two seconds?
(JAKE waits beat, looking deeper into the trees)
You heard her scream too. Madison wouldn’t mess with us like that.
COMRAD
COMRAD shrugs, showing he doesn’t really care.
I heard something. Probably a fox or whatever. This is Michigan, not a Stephen King book.
JAKE
(Says with nervousness and determination) No. That wasn’t an animal.
COMRAD
Then YOU go look for her, man, since apparently you’re the forest expert now.
Derrick and Molly White
Scene starts with MOLLY and DERRICK WHITE, a married couple but in distress. DERRICK has been driving drunk one night on a dirt road and had refused to let MOLLY drive. The tension has been building quietly for most of the ride until her fear of crashing causes her to finally speak up.
MOLLY
(Says in a trying to be bold tone) Pull over, Derrick
DERRICK
DERRICK is driving and glances to the side at MOLLY, seeing her new tone.
Molly, I am fine. I told you.
MOLLY
MOLLY keeps her chin raised, refusing to let this go, speaking in the bold tone that grows less shaky and a little louder.
No. Pull the car over. Right now.
DERRICK
DERRICK reluctantly pulls the car to the side of the road, huffing out a breath.
You’re overreacting, I’ve had worse nights and drove just fine then, woman.
MOLLY
You crossed the center line twice and took every corner too sharp.
DERRICK
(Says with a clenched jaw in frustration) I said I’m fine.
MOLLY
(Says with a huff and tiredness like they’re had this argument before) You always say that. Every single time, Derrick.
MOLLY grabs the car passenger door handle and leaves.
DERRICK
DERRICK’S eyes widen at her, and he tries to get out the door too, but fumbles on the door handle since he’s been drinking.
Wait… wait, Molly where are you going?
MOLLY
MOLLY takes a few steps away from the car.
Home. At least if I walk, I know I will make it home alive.
DERRICK
Molly, babe, come one. (He pauses, watching to see if she will respond.)
Okay, okay, you can drive, alright? Just- just come back to the car.
MOLLY
No. Not this time, Derrick. I’ll see you at home.
Officer Briggs and Officer Hokewater
Scene starts with OFFICER HOEKWATER and BRIGGS going over a report they just took of the first disappearance of the creature’s new cycle of taking people, a missing teenager. Both are aware this would happen soon, but the nervousness is still high that it’s actually happening.
BRIGGS
BRIGGS is clearly nervous as he looks over the paperwork and unease at the case at hand. He’s a bit figity, looking around, and trying to talk to HOEKWATER to maybe ease his worries.
Owen… there’s no blood. No body. Not even footprints.
HOEKWATER
While BRIGGS is nervous, HOEKWATER keeps his nervousness hidden away behind his stiff professionalism, dealing with this cover up in a regal manner. He focuses on his paperwork mostly.
Doesn’t mean anything. Get the witness statements finished, Briggs.
BRIGGS
BRIGGS keeps trying to look down and focus on his work, but his nervousness is distracting him.
I mean, no footprints, no struggles in the dirt, nothing.
How does someone just disappear like that?
(pauses a few moments, and asks cautiously) You don’t think IT’S finally here, do you?
HOEKWATER
(Says in a hiss to keep him quiet) Keep it down. We just have one missing person, and it’s a teenager. Teenagers do dumb stuff in small towns, we don’t know yet.
BRIGGS
I mean, it’s supposed to be this year, right? 19 years exactly. I mean, clearly we have our criminal.
HOEKWATER
(Says with a sarcastic note) You wanna write “monster” in the report?
BRIGGS
No, I just… I mean people are gonna start noticing if others go missing.
HOEKWATER
Briggs, keep it together. We have our job to do. If people start to notice, we shift their attention away.
BRIGGS
Maybe we should do something this time. Put up a sign. Curfew. Warn people not to go to the woods.
HOEKWATER
That’s not how it works. People vanish, we log it down, wait the few days till it’s over, then it’s gone. Now stop whining and keep working.
Garrett Ade
Scene starts with GARRETT arriving at his new property he just bought. He’s excited, ready to start working, and is already planning on what he’s going to do with the land.
GARRETT
GARRETT pulls out his camera and starts filming, showing off the area around him a little, and is full of excitement.
Alright, my dudes, this is officially it! My land.
GARRETT waves a hand to the area, presenting it with a smile, and then turns the camera to the woods and open field.
Like it’s actual land land. Not my uncle’s backyard, it’s all mine, thanks to you guys!
He pauses, admiring it with the camera.
I know it’s not much to look at right now, but I’ll have my bungalow up in six months tops!
And ohh boy, it’s gonna be sick!
And I’m not just talking a new abode, I’m talking campsite setups, fishing in the lake, survival challenges in the woods, the works! Oh, and I’d dig one of those wilderness saunas too!
(Says with an upbeat and grateful tone) Honestly though, this is beyond my dream.
A couple of years ago, I was filming trying to cook squirrel meat in an air fryer and now we’re here.
I mean, it’s kind of creepy out here. Like quiet quiet…
(Says in a brushing it off manner) Ah, who needs city sounds? I’m too pumped up!
Waubun “Bennie or Benny” and Ted
Scene starts with WAUBUN and TED talking, and is giving information on what this creature’s hunting cycle is. However, while TED is upset that this is happening to their knowledge and nothing is being done to stop it, while WAUBUN views this as terrible but as natural as a winter storm, a hurricane, a lion hunting it’s dinner.
TED
(Says with restrained anger) You knew… All this time, you knew what was out there.
WAUBUN
Our people has always known. My family before me knew, and my grandchildren will too.
TED
And you said NOTHING?
WAUBUN
You are not the first to figure it out, Ted. Because you paid attention to nature. But you are not everyone else. Would anyone in your town have listened?
TED
(Pauses a quiet moment) My little girl died because no one warned the town.
WAUBUN
(Says in a softer manner) I know. And you have my condolences on losing a child.
But your daughter is gone because the land takes what it is owed.
TED
Don’t say that, like she’s payment.
WAUBUN
You came here for truth, Ted, not comfort. Nature is not always mean to provide.
Humans take far more from this world then what it takes from us.
TED
These are people’s lives. You can’t expect me to sit and wait another 19 years for
more missing posters to pop up.
WAUBUN
That is what your town has already been doing. You cannot alter this more than a rock in a river. Nature will continue and I hope you understand… one day.
5 Hunters
Similar mindset and opinions, and none have a last name, it’s not their thing. All in a vigilante group to find and hunt the creature taking people since they don’t think the cops are bright enough to help. They’re all a bit unhinged, trigger happy, and don’t believe for a second a regular person is the killer.
Bobby
The more reasonable one of the group, and more of the leader since he can herd the others.
Hank
The most gun crazy and trigger happy, known for always having at least three weapons on him.
Bill
He’s convinced aliens have been taking the people, but he believes aliens for a lot of things.
Dale
A conspiracy nut and is convinced the government is involved, and the cops too of the town.
Boomer
The hunting expert, enjoyed it the most, but he goes missing too during a town wide search.
Lines:
Scene starts with two of the hunters walking off a few feet from the two wide search party to talk about how odd the cops of the town are handling this case. They are frustrated that they and their buddies seem to be the only ones in town brave enough to hunt down and stop who or whatever is taking people.
HUNTER #1
Town’s losing its mind over this whole thing.
HUNTER # 2
That’s what happens when cops spend more time talkin’ than huntin’.
HUNTER #1
(Makes a hum sound in agreement before talking) You notice they never let searches stay out after dark? Lot of them people went missing then.
HUNTER #2
Yeah, well, if I was chicken cop, I wouldn’t want to be out at night if I can help it.
HUNTER #1
(Says with a smirk) They still think it’s a bear. Or a drifter.
HUNTER #2
(Says with a shake of his head) Dang fools, they know nothing.
Whole town’s scared to even be near them woods.
HUNTER #1
I reckon we’re on the same page. It’s not human. And it’s not a normal animal.
Hey, you ever hear the stories folks tell of the woods?
HUNTER #2
(Says with a scoffing huff of disbelief) Course I did.
Heard the same junk grown’ up everyone else did.
HUNTER #1
And?
HUNTER #2
(Pauses, as if considering what to say) I think, like those stories say…
people disappear out here for more reasons than getting lost.
HUNTER #1
Then I guess we’d be the brains of this hunt…
(He smirks) since the cops are still looking for a drifter.
Jessie Turns and Madison
Female, 15-17 years old
Teenager girl attending a teenager party/hang out in the woods with five other teens when one of the girls wanders into the woods and is taken by the creature as the start of its new cycle. She is chiller than the other two girls, but enjoys hanging out with them more.
Lines:
Scene starts with a group of teenagers sitting around a campfire in the forest at night, including MADISON, JESSIE, and EMMA. One of the guys brought beer and the girls are mostly chatting with themselves as they boys amuse themselves.
MADISON
MADISON is annoyed with the teenage boys, and especially with the alcohol being brought, staring at them and crossing her arms.
(Says with an annoyed scoff to the boys) Can you guys not do this tonight?
Every time we come out here it’s the same stupid jokes.
JESSIE
JESSIE shrugs, acting calmer than Madison, and is mostly there to relax so she doesn’t yell at the boys.
They’re bored. Teenage boys plus cheap beer is a personality trait.
EMMA
EMMA acts like she doesn’t usually do these kinds of things, so she is nervous and shy to the wilder activities of the boys, and the thought of drinking.
(Says with a nervous tone) Can we maybe… keep it down a little?
What if someone hears us and finds the beer?
JESSIE
Emma, relax, the only thing out here is mosquitoes and squirrels.
MADISON
(Says with a disgusted look) And whatever
EMMA
EMMA shifts around nervously on her feet a little, glancing around.
I’m serious. This place feels weird at night.
JESSIE
This place feels weird during the day, Emma.
EMMA
Okay, fair point. But Comrad said, these woods are haunted and that people go missing.
MADISON
Don’t listen to Comrad OR Chad. They don’t know what’s real sober.
EMMA
EMMA shifts her eyes to the side in fear, as if hearing something.
Did you hear that?
MADISON
MADISON waves a nonchalant dismissive hand.
Chad is probably trying to summon a ghost again. Just relax, girl.
JESSIE
Still, Madison, I kinda get what she means. It’s creepy with an extra side of eerie tonight.
EMMA
See? Thank you, Jessie.
MADISON
MADISON shakes her head and shifts to the side, as if about to walk away.
You two are impossible. I’m gonna use the ladies room. Emma, come on.
EMMA starts to object but sees MADISON’S face and then nods, following her.
JESSIE
I’ll babysit the boys. But just remember, if something chases you, RUN!
JESSIE ends with a laugh and wave goodbye to them while MADISON and EMMA walk away into the woods.
